Par sa nature, la contrebande a tendance à passer inaperçue, aussi bien aux autorités qu’à la recherche historique. Reste que, malgré les problèmes méthodologiques que soulève son étude, elle ouvre plusieurs perspectives à l’analyse de divers phénomènes et notions, comme la formation et le fonctionnement de l’État, la territorialité et les frontières, la constitution des réseaux, les identités et le sentiment d’appartenance. À ce titre, la contrebande permet d’aborder le phénomène diasporique d’un point de vue à la fois inédit et fécond.
