Studiul durerii a făcut progrese atât în domeniul fundamental (mecanismele durerii), cât şi în practica clinică. În managementul durerii, evaluarea şi autoevaluarea sunt esenţiale, o analgezie adecvată având efecte favorabile imediate şi pe termen lung, deoarece durerea este un factor major care afectează calitatea vieţii. În acest domeniu de aplicare, cercetătorii au elaborat scale de autoevaluare a durerii şi măsurători comportamentale/scale de observaţie a durerii, cum ar fi : Chestionarul Mc Gill, Scala Analoagă Vizuală, Scala Obiectivă de Durere, Scala de Gradare a Durerii pe categorii de vârstă: Scala Oucher pentru 3-7 ani vârstă sau Scala CHEOPS (Scala de Durere a Spitalului de Copii din Ontario de Est). Trecerea în revistă a acestor scale generează concluzia: „standardul de aur” al măsurării durerii este autoevaluarea, la care se adaugă măsurătorile comportamentale şi-n fi nal măsurătorile biologice, care refl ectă răspunsul organismului la durere.
