Abstract
Diversity issues in higher education are generally discussed in the terms of how to increase the number of racial and/or ethnic minorities on campus. For faculty at community colleges, the issue isn’t so much how to achieve cultural diversity in the curriculum but how to use the rich diversity that exists within community colleges to demonstrate to the other sectors of higher education that achieving diversity is beneficial. On a micro level, the greatest diversity challenge for community colleges is how to allocate resources for prepared and underprepared college students. There are a number of promising practices for diversity in community colleges. Excelencia in Education is a national organization designed to apply knowledge to public policy and institutional practice to accelerate Latino student success in higher education. The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), founded in 1972, represents 34 colleges in the United States and one Canadian institution.
