Abstract
Montana’s Swan Valley is in the heart of the Crown of the Continent, an 18-million-acre ecosystem spanning the U.S.-Canada border and surrounding Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park. The Nature Conservancy considers it one of the top five intact ecosystems in the world. The Swan Valley is a forested gem, dotted with wetlands and teeming with wildlife such as grizzly bears, wolves, and lynx. It is surrounded on two sides by designated wilderness areas: the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area to the east and the Mission Mountains Wilderness to the west. The valley is home to a small community of residents and is the destination for many visitors who come to fish, hunt, hike, and explore. It is also adjacent to the Flathead Indian Reservation and is considered within the treaty territory of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. 1
