Abstract
When one gets to the actual stage of turning a question that has been of personal interest for many years into an actual concrete work, it becomes clear that producing a book is not the solitary experience that I used to think it had to be.There have been many people to whom I owe a great number of intellectual and personal debts for their support or for inspiring any originality that this work may have.Any defects are obviously not their fault, but lie with the author.My parents, John and Catherine Abbott, who immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1943, provided my siblings and me with an awareness of our Newfoundland Irish Catholic heritage that gave me my first insights into the relationship between religion and popular culture.And even though it has been many decades since I belonged to the Church, I look back very fondly on my Catholic experience.In particular, I feel gratitude to and respect for the saintly Rev. William Donnelly, parish priest of St Clement's, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, from 1955 until his untimely death at age 47 on 7 July 1964.Even before my first visit in 1966, I was fascinated by Québec's history and people; the countless acts of kindness from so many people when I lived there or during my frequent visits of research have only deepened my affection and strengthened my fascination for the people and the place.
