El ensayo revisará la relación entre la “Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los derechos de los pueblos indígenas” (UNDRIP) adoptada por la Asamblea General en 2007 y por Canadá en 2010, con la posterior creación de la “Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación”, ambos como instrumentos de diplomacia indígena. Lo anterior, servirá como punto de partida para conocer la situación federal de comunidades indias que han enfrentado por décadas discriminación e imposición de políticas de asimilación a patrones culturales que les son ajenos, lo que conlleva la pérdida de tradiciones sociales y económicas, y en casos extremos algunos fueron víctimas de las llamadas residential schools católicas desde inicios del Siglo XX, establecidas por la Indian Act de 1876.
