Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the critical juncture that we find ourselves at in relation to sustainable housing, but also wider sustainability considerations. We know that in order to meet decarbonisation goals by the middle of the century (if not sooner) the time before 2030 is going to be critical and have a large baring on if those longer term objectives will be achieved. We discuss the future we are likely creating if we continue on a business-as-usual approach and cover core arguments around the urgency of change required. If done right, a sustainable housing transition will not just be about improving design, materials, technologies, and construction methods, but will also be a way to help address a range of other social justice and equity issues that have been exacerbated by rapidly worsening housing unaffordability issues around the world. We draw on this framing to start to present innovations in sustainable housing which will be important for guiding the wider sustainable housing transition.
