Combining elements of randomized complete block experimental designs (RCBD) with strip trials into a systematic, row column MORSE (modulated on-farm response surface experiments), could increase efficiency along with greater statistically validity in on-farm experimentation. The objective was to evaluate a MORSE design to remove spatial covariance in a nitrogen response trial. An agronomic trial with 10 levels of nitrogen fertilizer, replicated 10 times was conducted in 2021. The yield distribution of the experimental layout was modelled using spatial covariance kriging to reduce spatial effects. The blocking of the MORSE design failed to remove spatial variability however, the geostatistical approach using spherical spatial correlation improved experimental precision.
