Abstract
Le traité de Roubo en quatre chapitres sur l’art de la menuiserie, L’Art du menuisier, publié entre 1769 et 1774 par l’Académie royale des Sciences, est considéré comme une source de premier ordre sur les matériaux, les outils et les techniques utilisés par les menuisiers au xviiie siècle. Bien que souvent cité par les historiens d’art et les spécialistes du mobilier, l’ouvrage n’a jamais fait l’objet, dans son intégralité, d’un examen approfondi ou d’une expertise. Cet essai va tenter de déterminer, grâce aux recherches historiographiques actuelles, dans quelle mesure le contenu des travaux de Roubo renvoie aux pratiques actuelles du métier. Il apparaît ainsi indispensable que le lecteur de Roubo ait connaissance d’un certain nombre de parutions en liaison avec le contexte et la destination de l’ouvrage pour que son contenu puisse être correctement évalué.
