Abstract
This chapter analyzes the semantics of embodied difference over and against the reductive assimilation of difference to disease and disability. It discusses narrative medicine that invites attention to the ways in which early modern Jesuit fathers, Hospitaller sisters, Recollect brothers, and others made meanings of embodied difference through the medium of narrative. It also reviews the narrative medicine's implicit critique of the subordination of patient stories to practitioner interpretations of illness that buttresses ethical ambition. The chapter expands the interpretative possibilities for making sense of disability in ways that didn't end with its effacement and the reinscription of the normative body. It is an inquiry into the meanings that embodied difference in early modern Catholic Canada under the French regime.
