Abstract
Cuarenta años después de su muerte, Glenn Gould sigue gozando de enorme atención y prestigio internacional, y provocando un considerable debate por su excepcional forma de tocar el piano así como por sus ideas y personalidad. En la actualidad hay disponible una cantidad abrumadora de información sobre él, lo cual requiere realizar una cuidadosa evaluación de las fuentes para distinguir los datos probados de las numerosas y generalizadas exageraciones y leyendas. Es fundamental valorar a Gould como un todo, con una visión panorámica que integre los aspectos físicos, psicológicos y sociales en un contexto particular. La mayoría de los artículos y tesis sobre Gould hacen referencia al artista, pero existe mucha menos literatura centrada en el ser humano. Esta tesis doctoral se focaliza en su salud y personalidad, aunque teniendo presente al músico. Se han revisado los principales hechos biográficos y extraído abundantes observaciones sobre su personalidad, enfermedades y trastornos a partir del análisis de documentos privados conservados en la Biblioteca y Archivos de Ganadá, en Ottawa. Sobre Gould continúan surgiendo muchas cuestiones y dudas, generando notables discusiones, como si tenía un trastorno del espectro del autismo, si padeció distonía o las razones para decidir retirarse definitivamente de los conciertos con treinta y un años. La principal conclusión de esta investigación es que Glenn Gould mostraba una Doble Excepcionalidad, un diagnóstico dual donde las altas capacidades intelectuales se acompañan de algún trastorno, dificultad o discapacidad de diferente naturaleza. Sus dos caras eran, por un lado, el inteligente y extraordinario pianista, y por otro, el ser ansioso, lleno de rarezas, miedos y preocupaciones; el éxtasis del músico y la angustia del hombre.
