L’articolo è dedicato a un’immagine centrale dell’opera e della riflessione di Buzzati: le montagne viste da lontano, quasi un mitologema che compare già, oltre che nel romanzo d’esordio Bàrnabo delle montagne (1933), nelle didascalie stese in quello stesso anno per il fototesto La stagione della montagna. Il tema viene indagato attraverso un’analisi puntuale del romanzo, affiancata da riferimenti ad altri lavori di Buzzati, come I miracoli di Val Morel; vengono stabiliti confronti con l’arte figurativa (Tiziano commentato da Buzzati; Cézanne), con le leggende delle Dolomiti (Karl Felix Wolff), con altri scrittori veneti (Zanzotto) e con il fototesto Un villaggio della Val di Fassa pubblicato nel 1949 da Arturo Brambilla.
