Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

It seems fitting that the remarkably visual and tactile e-book and digital resource, Burgundian Black: Reworking Early Modern Colour Technologies, had its beginning in the planning for an exhibition of paintings and textiles at the Museum Hof van Busleyden in Mechelen, Belgium.A major centre of luxury cloth production in the Burgundian Low Countries, Mechelen became the capital of the Spanish Netherlands in the early sixteenth century under Margaret of Austria at a time when black-in the form of cloaks, men's and women's upper garments, large hoods or hats (chaperon), and stockings-had become the central colour of elite fashion, a fact well attested in manuscript paintings, courtly inventories, sumptuary laws, and dyers' recipe books. The curators of the Mechelen exhibition sought to evoke this history and to create "an active dialogue between past, present and future." 1 The Burgundian Black project that grew out of this initial public-facing curatorial venture combines the best of archival research with contemporary technologies to reveal the history of a colour to a broader public online. As part of the initiative, the multidisciplinary collaborators, including historians of art and science, conservators, chemists, and artists, have brought reams of 400-and 500-year-old dye and pigment recipes to life by reworking them with approximations of historical materials. They have documented the process through stunning photography and close-shot videos that capture the magic of, for instance, a dyed wool emerging bright green from a woad dyebath and oxidizing to its final blue before our eyes. And while the Back to Black exhibition in Mechelen ended in 2021, the Burgundian Black resource will continue to unfold the making and meanings of the soft, velvety experience of Burgundian black for its digital audience.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
