Abstract
Le succès commercial du Mercure galant et l’appui financier du Dauphin de France permettent à Jean Donneau de Visé d’investir dans la production de gravures dès 1678. Outre les pièces musicales, énigmes et autres planches de modes, on retrouve dans ce recueil périodique royaliste cinq gravures illustrant des batailles menées dans les colonies antillaises. À partir de ce corpus restreint, cet article interroge les fonctions de l’image et ses modes de pérennisation du règne et réfléchit à la place de la gravure dans le Mercure galant et sur le marché de l’imprimé parisien aux 17e et 18e siècles.
