Le flibustier Robert Chevalier (1686-1731) a-t-il raconté au romancier Alain-René Lesage que M. de Longueuil fut sauvé par sa corne à poudre ? Non, mais en 1937, Aegidius Fauteux le suppose. Or, un passage tiré du Mercure galant de janvier 1691 (une relation de Monseignat) embrouille l’affaire, d’autant que ce best-seller du tournant du siècle n’est presque jamais cité parmi les sources dans l’historiographie canadienne. Cela fait du corpus américain du Mercure galant un point aveugle dans la discipline. L’exemple de la corne à poudre montrera qu’il est fort probable que le Mercure galant soit en fait une source majeure des textes sur la Nouvelle-France.
