Cette enquête montre comment la représentation dans le Mercure galant du ballet diplomatique entre Français, Britanniques et Autochtones en Amérique du Nord souffre d’un traitement inégal des acteurs en présence. Dans le contexte de la rivalité impériale exacerbée par la guerre de Succession d’Espagne (1701-1713), les ambassadeurs britanniques s’y voient systématiquement dénigrés, tant par les commentaires des correspondants du périodique que par les propos rapportés des représentants autochtones. Sans surprise, les émissaires de la France et leurs alliés sortent grands vainqueurs de cette mise en scène tendancieuse. À l’opposé, les comptes rendus de ces négociations consignés par les administrateurs britanniques, objets de la dernière partie de l’étude, donnent un tout autre tableau de ces échanges tripartites où les sujets du Roi-Soleil sont loin de tenir le plus beau rôle.
