Abstract
Le cirque social est une approche d'action sociale qui utilise les arts du cirque pour soutenir le développement d’individus ayant des besoins psychosociaux particuliers (Caravan, 2010 ; Lafortune, 2011). Cette pratique est présente dans plusieurs pays. Au Canada, Cirque Hors Piste (CHP) est l'organisme de cirque social le plus important et le plus établi. Bien que la capacité de CHP à mener à bien sa mission ait été profondément affectée par la pandémie de la COVID-19, l'organisation a réussi à transformer certains aspects de cette crise en opportunités qui ont ouvert la voie à de perspectives passionnantes. Pendant les années avant la pandémie, CHP se situait au centre d'une communauté de pratique interconnectée à travers le Canada tout en restant étroitement lié à ses partenaires internationaux. Cet article examine comment CHP a fonctionné pendant la crise de la COVID-19 entre 2020 et 2022, alors que les mesures de distanciation physique remettaient en question l'essence même du cirque social, grâce à beaucoup d’ingéniosité et au fait que leurs membres plus jeunes sont toujours au cœur du processus décisionnel. L'article sert également d'étude qui documente une période atypique devenue un tournant, tant sur le plan social qu'artistique, pour l'organisme, dont les forces se sont avérées utiles pour naviguer dans ce contexte. En effet, CHP a su établir sa place au sein des milieux professionnels, disciplinaires, culturels et artistiques. Enfin, l'article vise à offrir une réflexion plus large sur l'avenir de CHP, et plus généralement sur la place du cirque social dans l'avenir du monde du cirque. Social circus is an approach to social action that uses circus arts to support the development of individuals with special psychosocial needs (Caravan, 2010; Lafortune, 2011). This practice is present in a number of countries. In Canada, Cirque Hors Piste (CHP) is the largest and most established social circus organization. While CHP’s capacity to carry out its mission has been deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has also managed to transform some aspects of this unfortunate crisis into opportunities that have opened up exciting prospects. Before the pandemic, CHP had been at the centre of a networked community of practice throughout Canada for several years while remaining strongly connected to its international partners. This article examines how CHP operated during the COVID-19 crisis between 2020 and 2022, as physical distancing measures challenged the very essence of social circus, thanks to a great deal of creativity and the fact that their younger members are always at the heart of the decision-making process. The article also functions as a study that documents an atypical period that became a turning point—both socially and artistically—for the organization, whose strengths proved useful in navigating this context. Indeed, CHP has established its place within professional, disciplinary, cultural and artistic milieus. Lastly, the article aims to offer a broader reflection on the future of CHP, and more generally on the place of social circus in the future of the circus world.
