Abstract
A book's unity is an illusion conjured up via the labour of many people. Some of them leave their mark clearly and others do so less visibly.I assembled and reassembled the fragments of thought, observation, conversation, and writing in this book over a long period of time, which makes it difficult to adequately recognize everyone who has, in one way or another and at one time or another, contributed. Therefore, to everyone who has supported the making of Making Out in the Mainstream, I extend my heartfelt appreciation.I am especially indebted to my mentors: Tom Waugh, who, in addition to introducing me to the field of lgbtq media studies, facilitated my first contact with McGill-Queen's University Press; Will Straw, whose courses in the graduate programme in communication at McGill University all those years ago expanded my horizons immeasurably; and Lisa Henderson, whose grace, generosity, and awesome intellect I deeply admire.I am lucky to have had them as teachers, and luckier still to count them among my friends.Larry Gross remains a guiding influence and was instrumental in securing my entrée to glaad. He also provided a thorough assessment of a late draft of this book.
Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
