Abstract
Significance The by-election outcome is better for the Liberals than the Conservatives, who have yet to see a surge in support following efforts by leader Pierre Poilievre to move the party to the right. Evident voter fatigue with the eight-year-old Liberal government does not appear enough to give Conservatives a clear advantage at the next federal election. Impacts The NDP will threaten to end its support for the Liberal government over the foreign interference issue but will ultimately not do so. Voters in Quebec may be more receptive to Poilievre’s message but the impact will be reduced by the popularity of the Bloc Quebecois. Rumours of a Liberal leadership challenge to Trudeau are exaggerated and he will lead the party into the next election.
