Funkcje wykonawcze (executive functions -EF) pozwalają na ukierunkowane i celowe działanie człowieka.Cechują się wieloaspektową, obligatoryjną i uporządkowaną organizacją.Obejmują takie aspekty, jak planowanie, zdolność przełączania się, kontrola hamowania czy umiejętność podejmowania adekwatnych decyzji.Z uwagi na charakterystykę objawów anoreksji (anorexia nervosa -AN) i bulimii psychicznej (bulimia nervosa -BN), które obejmują sztywne czy impulsywne zachowania służące kontroli lub utracie masy ciała, postanowiono sprawdzić sprawność wykonawczą młodych kobiet z diagnozą AN i BN.Na podstawie przeglądu metaanaliz zauważono, że wyniki uzyskiwane przez badaczy są różne.Dostępne są prace, które dowodzą trudności w tym zakresie u osób chorujących na anoreksję i bulimię psychiczną, oraz takie, których wyniki im przeczą.Istotnym czynnikiem w rozwoju zaburzeń odżywiania są emocje, dlatego zainspirowano się koncepcją "gorących" i "zimnych" EF.Pierwsze są uruchamiane w sytuacji wzbudzającej emocje lub napięcie między natychmiastową a odroczoną gratyfikacją, natomiast drugie w sytuacji neutralnej emocjonalnie.W grupie kryterialnej (n = 15) i kontrolnej (n = 19) porównano poziom EF za pomocą trzech testów neuropsychologicznych: Kolorowego testu połączeń, Testu wieży londyńskiej i eksperymentalnej wersji Iowa Gambling Task.Profil EF kobiet z AN i BN był nieharmonijny -najczęściej przejawiały one deficyty przełączania się i planowania, z kolei w zadaniach, w których oceniano czas wykonania, uzyskiwały wyniki zbliżone do kobiet zdrowych.Poznanie EF osób z AN i BN pozwoli lepiej zrozumieć czynniki wpływające na rozwój i utrzymywanie się objawów, co może skutkować wzrostem efektywności leczenia.
