This thesis constructs a deterministic mathematical model for cell survival fraction following a dose of ionizing radiation.The model also includes recent research on the importance of the mitochondria to the cell's response to radiation as well as mitochondria dynamics, the effect of cellular energy on cell repair and the induction of cell damage and cell death by mitochondrial endogenous reactive oxygenated species.Finally, the model accounts for the difference between indirect and direct action on nuclear DNA by ionizing radiation by tracking single track events separately from multiple track events.By incorporating the mitochondria, the effects of linear energy transfer and oxygen saturation on cell survival are addressed in the model.The model's output of cell survival fraction, indirect action, direct action and radiation oxygen enhancement ratio are compared to existing experimental data yielding strong qualitative and quantitative agreement.
