Abstract
The Canadian border is understood as an invisible line imposed into the landscape but this assertion, although accepted as true, is flawed. This thesis is an examination of the disconnect between intent and reality of the spatial conditions of the border. It reflects on the power structures of the border and considers what it means to abolish the border. These spatial conditions of the Canada-US border are investigated through policies, jurisdiction, and historical events, exploiting their capacities to undermine the political constructs of this invisible line. This thesis was intended as a response to the Safe Third Country Agreement but grew to become a critical reflection on what makes up the border, and the complexity of its policies, its people and its infrastructure. The border, and the manipulation and control of land through its imposition is a colonial project that affects many people and many generations through time.
