Abstract
Cet article vise à montrer en quoi l’oeuvre du philosophe et linguiste français Frédéric François offre un cadre théorique pertinent pour étudier les définitions du verbe d’élèves de l’école primaire. Attentif aux différentes façons de mettre en mots des équivalences sémantiques, il met au jour des conduites stables, fonctionnelles quand il s’agit de définir des mots lexicaux mais des classements grammaticaux problématiques qui demandent à être interprétés. La perspective dialogique dans laquelle il aborde les justifications des élèves, comme ouvertes à différents modes d’interpréter, offre une solution alternative à une lecture normative des productions scolaires. Dans notre corpus de 93 définitions, l’alignement des réponses selon une matrice dominante – le verbe est une action – fait apparaître des «événements» au sens de Frédéric François, traduisant la fonction prédicative du verbe et sa capacité à signifier le temps.
