Abstract
Paul Vidal de la Blache (1845-1918) a toujours eu un grand intérêt pour la « modernisation » du monde. Il était fasciné par la grande influence des réseaux de chemins de fer sur l’organisation spatiale, la structure sociale, le mode de gouvernement et la mentalité des peuples. Il tentait d’expliquer les interrelations ou combinaisons complexes entre « les structures traditionnelles et fixes » et « les contacts et circulations modernes ». Cet article constitue une réflexion sur le rôle qu’ont joué les études de Vidal à propos de la modernisation de pays asiatiques, dans la formation et l’approfondissement de ses propres conceptions géographiques. Quelle perspective le géographe a-t-il dégagé de l’expérience de la modernisation dans une région non européenne ? En étudiant ses recherches sur l’Asie, on peut reconsidérer non seulement le développement de sa conception de la géographie humaine moderne, mais aussi sa vision de la formation du monde moderne.
