Abstract
Paul Vidal de la Blache (1845-1918) vint à deux reprises au Québec : en 1904, en route vers les États-Unis, et en 1912, à titre de membre de la Mission Champlain. L’article présente une analyse de trois aspects de cet épisode de la carrière de Vidal. L’attention est d’abord portée sur les voyages eux-mêmes, sous l’angle du motif, de la circonstance et du déroulement. Ensuite, le regard se tourne vers le rôle que Vidal tint ou ne put tenir dans l’édification de la géographie savante au Canada français. Finalement, sont examinés les écrits que Vidal produisit à la faveur de ses deux voyages outre-Atlantique. À ce titre, l’étude s’attache à trois thèmes : le point de vue de Vidal sur le Canada français, l’américanisme, qu’il conçut comme le genre de vie spécifique au continent nord-américain, et la modernisation économique et politique que commandait la dynamique géographique de l’époque.
