Abstract
Après la phase d’appréciation critique de la géographie classique par les géographes des années 1970, l’oeuvre de Vidal de la Blache a été réexaminée en profondeur et des rééditions ou ouvrages d’histoire de la discipline l’ont mieux fait connaître. Dans cet article, nous proposons de relire une oeuvre peu connue de Vidal de la Blache, États et nations de l’Europe. Autour de la France, publiée en 1889. Du point de vue de l’histoire de la géographie, cette oeuvre est intéressante à plus d’un titre. Elle permet, d’une part, de saisir une forme de conception de l’Europe, après celle élaborée de manière originale et marquante par Élisée Reclus. Elle illustre, ensuite, la manière propre à l’auteur de convoquer l’histoire et la géographie avant l’autonomisation décisive de la géographie. Enfin, elle livre des analyses saisissantes de certains faits politiques.
