L’expression « féminisation du sida » est communément utilisée pour évoquer la plus grande vulnérabilité des femmes au VIH et la manière disproportionnée dont elles en sont infectées. Cette expression sert en quelque sorte de raccourci pour désigner le fait que le sexe féminin et le genre féminin interagissent pour rendre les jeunes filles et les femmes particulièrement vulnérables à l’infection. Dans cet article, j’émets l’idée qu’une focalisation sur la vulnérabilité à l’infection est excessivement réductrice et qu’en fait, le sida peut être considéré comme étant « féminisé » — ou comme ayant des conséquences et des implications particulières pour les femmes — de multiples manières. J’examine trois études de cas concernant le VIH provenant de mon travail de terrain en Papouasie–Nouvelle-Guinée : la première porte sur la vulnérabilité des femmes dans le contexte de l’extraction des ressources minières ; la deuxième concerne un atelier de sensibilisation au sida au cours duquel les hommes et les femmes en sont presque venus aux coups ; et la troisième démontre l’isolement social et la dévalorisation morale accrus des femmes lorsqu’elles reçoivent un diagnostic de séropositivité. À travers l’analyse de ces trois cas, je suggère que le genre, en tant que concept analytique, doit être considéré comme l’une des dimensions des épidémies à tous leurs stades — de la vulnérabilité à l’intervention, jusqu’au traitement et aux soins.
