Bien que les époques, lieux et protagonistes qui sous-tendent la diégèse ces deux best-sellers (écrits en anglais mais dont la traduction française a été tout aussi retentissante) soient différents, Lewis & Stoker, à un centenaire d’intervalle, procèdent à une représentation de l’abjection qui se nourrit à une même esthétique de l’horreur (théorisée par Ann Radcliffe), qui a servi de pilier au développement de tout un pan de la catégorie todorovienne du « fantastique-merveilleux » procédant du surnaturel inexpliqué, dans un contexte où le diable semble tirer explicitement ou implicitement plusieurs ficelles. Dans cette optique, à l’aide de quelques cas figures centrés principalement sur deux manifestations de l’abject — le cadavre et la présence satanique —, nous proposons d’interroger l’adaptation filmique de ces deux romans pour répondre à la question suivante : l’abjection — tant dans sa dimension psychologique et phénoménologique telle que l’a développée Julia Kristeva, que dans aspect culturel ou anthropologique, tel que l’a proposé Georges Bataille —, pourtant bien sollicitée dans les deux romans, s’exporte-t- elle de manière aussi efficace chez les cinéphiles qui, d’une part, sont exposés à une surenchère d’images macabres dans le Dracula de Coppola, alors que, d’autre part, ils doivent se contenter de les imaginer dans le Moine de Moll ?
