Au début des années 1980, deux films, Bon peuple portugais (1981) de Rui Simões et Gestes et fragments (1982) d’Alberto Seixas Santos, sont finalisés au Portugal dans des circonstances difficiles ; quelques années seulement après la Révolution portugaise de 1974-1975, il semblait incomber à ces deux projets de représenter le « deuil » de cette période révolutionnaire. Ce texte interroge ainsi la place de ces deux films-essais dans le cinéma portugais de l’époque. Capables d’interroger la mémoire encore vive de l’événement et d’intervenir dans l’écriture possible de cette histoire, les deux projets mettent plus particulièrement en perspective la figure d’Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho, qui apparaît comme une icône ambiguë de cette dernière révolution romantique d’Europe.
