Abstract
Abstract This chapter explains the structure of the book and introduces its central themes. It seeks to explore the origins, survival, and (where appropriate) the demise of different multinational union states, all of which originated in the early to mid-19th century, and often in the context of the Napoleonic wars and subsequent European settlement. It explains the choice of the principal case studies—Great Britain and Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden-Norway, Austria-Hungary, and Canada, with some additional references to the Grand Duchy of Finland and the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. It argues that most of these union states were redefined composite monarchies; and that most of them owed their origins, at least in part, to British diplomacy, and specifically to the diplomatic circle around Viscount Castlereagh. The chapter argues that the British effectively exported the idea of union elsewhere in Europe at this time.
