Abstract
Since our first contact in 2009, Bob Ross has been a constant source of encouragement in my academic career.As supervisor of my dissertation research, he not only stimulated my research interest in international relations theory and Chinese foreign policy but also encouraged me to compare and contrast Chinese experiences with those of great powers in the West.Tim Crawford taught me how to uncover patterns in the dynamics of international relations by using process-tracing techniques and structured, focused comparisons.Peter Krause enabled me to articulate and refine my theories in the political science discipline.I am indebted to all my dissertation committee members, as they provided me with a stimulating and congenial environment in
