Aux spécialistes des études Maritimes, la chaire Winthrop Pickard Bell offre la précieuse récompense d'une période de réflexion, permettant le recul nécessaire pour évaluer les rapports entre l'activité intellectuelle individuelle et les intérêts de la communauté universitaire en général.Libéré des contraintes d'un échéancier rigide, on peut présenter ses idées non seulement à des collègues mais aussi au grand public.Replongée dans la routine universitaire, je suis d'autant plus reconnaissante de ces quelques mois de répit.Envers tous ceux dont j'ai apprécié la gentillesse et l'intelligence pendant mon séjour à Sackville, ma gratitude est sans limite.Par ailleurs, je tiens à remercier tout particulièrement Larry McCann, un être rare, un lecteur attentionné, passionné et exigeant.C'est en grande partie à lui qu'il convient d'attribuer la part utile des pages qui suivent.
