Abstract
Many terms used in this book have fallen into disuse or now have pejorative connotations.We have nonetheless used the terms found in the primary documents in order to give readers a fuller understanding of the phenomenon of historical Métis identity.The following terms appear: Indian, Sauvage/Sauvagesse, Half-breed, mixed-blood, white, and Canadien (for French Canadian).This terminology was widely in use in the nineteenth century, including in communications authored by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people themselves, as well as in the correspondence of colonial authorities, commercial elites, and clerics.Also, the term Outaouais as used in this text goes beyond the administrative frontiers of the region in Québec that carries this name.To remind readers of this distinction, we occasionally refer to the greater Outaouais.This use of Outaouais encompasses the watershed of the Ottawa River (Rivière des Outaouais), while references to the Gatineau Valley refer to that river's watershed plus that of the Lièvre River.These designations trace the territory occupied and travelled by the inhabitants of a few Métis hamlets in the nineteenth century, a community tied together by a common history and culture.
