Intrusion detection is one of the cornerstones of cyber defense. In order to prevent intruders from gaining unauthorized access to Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure, efficient intrusion detection systems (IDS) must be implemented in IoT networks to detect attacks, protect information and secure communications. Nonetheless, IDS in IoT networks impose additional design challenges compared to traditional IT systems such as strict efficiency requirements. In this paper, we propose an approach for the classification of IDS-based detection models for detecting attacks in IoT networks. More specifically, we conduct an extensive review on current solutions related to IDS frameworks, methods, models, and detection mechanisms used in IoT networks. We investigate the advantages and limitations of these IDS in terms of their performance and efficiency and study their suitability to deployment in IoT systems.
