Abstract
Preface to the Second Edition Catherine Marshall has been part of my life for many years now.I first came upon mention of her when I was beginning research on Bertrand Russell's pacifist activities during the First World War.Initially, she appeared as one of a number of people who had worked in support of conscientious objectors, but it soon became clear that her role had been quite substantial.There was also mention of her prewar work as a suffragist, but I do not think I had previously come across her name.Somewhat to my surprise, I received a research grant that enabled me to spend a summer in the UK.In those heady days of the late 19608, living there was cheap and the exchange rate with Canada favourable.Through my (then) husband we also, from time to time, had access to free transatlantic RCAF air flights.It all sounds rather improbable now, and so it did to me, in 1969.But I took a deep breath and set off with my two teenage daughters, one to follow her dream of attending classes at the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, the other to attend a Quaker summer school and hang out with me.Through the good offices of my brother George we found accommodation in London and I explored resources there.One of the collections I visited was, of course, the Quaker archives at Friends House, Euston Road, where I gained a great deal of insight from reading the wartime issues of The Friend, a Quaker weekly journal.Much later, boxes of papers about the Friends Service Committee would be found there, but at this time there was little relevant primary documentation available.I think it was Ted Milligan, the librarian, who told me about Catherine Marshall's papers, held by what was then the Cumberland
