Le 19 septembre 1960, le jour du début des classes à l'Université Laurentienne, on discutait, dans les pages du Sudbury Star, de ce que le journal avait nommé " la plus grande expérience entreprise dans le cadre de l'enseignement supérieur canadien ". Étant donné le mandat bilingue et triculturel de la nouvelle université, ainsi que ses complexités religieuses, le Star prédit qu'il y aurait inévitablement des tensions et des contretemps mais que, grâce à la coopération, la bonne volonté et la bonne entente, il y aurait aussi des accomplissements majeurs. L'Université Laurentienne : une histoire, l'oeuvre de cinq membres de la faculté Laurentienne (quatre historiens et un sociologue), explore les maintes façons que la réalité a reflété les prédictions du Star. Ce livre marque le cinquantième anniversaire de la fondation de l'Université Laurentienne. Il trace les racines historiques de l'Université dans le Nord de l'Ontario et examine six principaux thèmes : la gouvernance universitaire ; l'évolution académique ; le bilinguisme et le triculturalisme ; les étudiants ; l'association des professeures et professeurs ; le rôle des femmes. L'exploration de ces thèmes, lesquels sont les éléments de basée de l'expérience de la Laurentienne, illumine le caractère unique et le succès de cette institution. Cette première histoire détaillée de l'Université Laurentienne permet également une compréhension plus approfondie des développements et des changements au sein de l'éducation postsecondaire canadienne au cours des cinquante dernières années.
