Abstract
and jewellery maker David Neel is a story of origins, birth, displacement, reconnection, and fatherhood.It is also a candid reflection upon his experiences as one among "the scooped generation" of Indigenous children who grew up separated from their Indigenous family members, often forcibly so.Neel's story is not, however, that of an adoptee or a residential school survivor, but of an infant whose ties to Indigenous family and community are attenuated as his young mother Karen Neel moves from Vancouver to Calgary in the mid-1960s following the sudden death of David's father, David Lyle Neel, in an automobile accident.The geographic distance between David Neel and members of his father's family necessarily engendered a cultural distance, a gap that David would bridge as a man in his late twenties.Neel's peregrinations are vital to his art-making practice.Some of his earliest memories are of his father's work -modernist paintings and sculptures that innovatively combined elements of Western Modernism with Kwakiutl stories, colours, and compositions to create an urban Indigenous aesthetic.The autobiographical tale that the younger David tells reveals how these images were important to him as a young child.They allowed him to imagine connections to his father
