Abstract
I left my home in Saskatoon in 1978, when I was seventeen, to join a new federal youth program called Katimavik.My plan was to travel and volunteer with other young Canadians in different provinces.I quickly learned that Katimavik had three rules: no sex, no drugs, and no hitchhiking.In November we stayed at the youth hostel in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec.My diary entry says, "I broke the hitchhiking rule today ... After work we hitchhiked to St. Irene.On the way home, we stopped at the top of the hill and philosophized for a while." Next I wrote, "Fate is what happens when your past catches up with your future!"This unique project would not exist in its present form without the help of many special baby boomers: Katimavikers Branca Verde and Alan Dickson; my delightful travelling companions and confederates Shawn Koeckeritz, Duff Sigurdsen, Arleen Rainbow May, and Kim Hunter; Douglas Williams, who sent me his book Promised Lands
