Abstract
The genesis of this book occurred in 2003 when I happened upon a paperback copy of James Belich's Making Peoples while browsing the stacks of the Elizabeth Dafoe Library at the University of Manitoba.I was struck first by the evocative cover, then by Belich's vivid prose, and finally by his reflections that the histories of Canada and New Zealand were quite similar.I wondered immediately if someone else had explored this subject further.Reading the transplanted Kiwi historian Robin Fisher's book Contact and Conflict confirmed my suspicions that there was a story to tell about both colonial New Zealand and colonial British Columbia. With the encouragement of Adele Perry, Jarvis Brownlie, and Tony Ballantyne, I then embarked on a PhD at the University of Otago in 2008.Truly there is no greater testament to the power of a history book than a life changed! At the University of Otago, both Tony Ballantyne and Angela Wanhalla encouraged my passion for nineteenth-century newspapers and guided me through their own engagement with the history of the British Empire. For financial support during my studies I am grateful to the Government of New Zealand for a New Zealand

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; the direct Gemma label and the distilled Codex classifier agree on what is shown here.
