Ce texte analyse deux films de Charles Gagnon réalisés à la fin des années 1960 : Le Huitième Jour, conçu pour le Pavillon chrétien d’Expo 67 à Montréal, et Le Son d’un espace, présenté pour la première fois dans le cadre de la Sixième Biennale de Paris, en 1969. L’étude s’appuie en grande partie sur des sources qui permettent de mieux comprendre les conditions de production et de présentation des films au moment de leur réalisation grâce notamment au Fonds d’archives Charles Gagnon récemment mis à disposition des chercheur·euse·s à Bibliothèque et Archives du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada. L’article se penche plus spécifiquement sur le double rôle de l’archive : d’une part, comme constitutive de la forme et du contenu du cinéma de réemploi (found footage) dans lequel Le Huitième Jour s’inscrit et, d’autre part, comme une façon d’exposer la matérialité filmique dans Le Son d’un espace. La réflexion est traversée par l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’archive rendrait visibles les traces matérielles du film tant au moment de la conception, du montage et de l’enregistrement qu’au moment du visionnement. Examiner ces films en parallèle permet aussi de mettre en évidence que, pour Charles Gagnon, la spécificité du cinéma est déterminée par ses supports à la fois visuel et sonore.
