Abstract
Wa&s;gwan is a Jamaican Patois saying that asks “What&s;s going on?” This greeting invites us to share what is going on in our lives, our work, and our places in the world. AJA created this graffiti art as a way of expressing his understanding of what decolonization means. Decolonization starts with inquiry and listening. AJA wrote this word with large looping letters, each letter encompassing a straight line, suggesting a line of connection between separate elements. Attending Canada&s;s Truth and Reconciliation Commission&s;s call to action, the artist takes up “Wa&s;gwan” as an invitation to confront and address truths about the impact of colonization on our literacies, our schools, and our communities. Beginning with this graffiti, the reader is invited to attend to the stories of the impact of colonized literacy education on the authors’ lives, confront the harm that has been done by colonization in the past, and the barriers continued colonization creates in the present. This artwork opens the collection with an invitation to listen, to learn, and to inquire, as these are the first steps towards reconciliation – understanding each other and our hopes for the future.
