Honey bees (Apis spp.) are important components of ecosystems largely because of their pollination services. Within the last few decades, globalization has exposed honey bees to multiple invasive parasites, resulting in substantial honey bee colony losses, with attendant economic woes for apiculture that relies on western honey bees (Apis mellifera). To defend themselves, honey bees rely on their olfactory systems to detect parasitized nestmates, largely via chemical changes in the latter’s cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. We review here how honey bee olfaction enables the detection of parasitized nestmates and how that in turn can drive specific hygienic behaviors. Enhancement of these hygienic responses may be one way to mitigate ongoing colony losses.
