Abstract

Chronological age is the greatest risk factor for most common chronic diseases. However, molecular and cellular age-related decline varies substantively between individuals because ageing is heterogeneous and not well captured by chronological age alone.1,2 Biological age is a more informative marker of disease risk and mortality than chronological age, better representing the complex interplay between ageing, chronic disease, environmental exposures, lifestyle, and genetic risk. For accurate risk stratification, reliable ageing biomarkers are needed,2 and multiple molecular, cellular, and physiological biomarkers have been proposed so far.
