Abstract
In 1952, a civil defense film featured an animated character named Bert the Turtle in the song "Duck and Cover," played for millions of US schoolchildren over ensuing decades."There was a turtle by the name of Bert / And Bert the Turtle was very alert," the unbearably bouncy tune begins."When danger threatened him he never got hurt / He knew just what to do"-retreat into his shell, a model for kids to get on the floor and cover their heads in a nuclear attack.So catchy was this song about an alleged safety tactic, and so soothing its cartoon of nuclear impact, that Bert became a star in other media: recorded as a single in 1953, "Duck and Cover" sold three million copies.
