Abstract
This account of Canadians who operated behind enemy lines in Europe and Asia between 1939 and 1945 has not been easy to write. The discovery that there were, to my surprise, so many Canadians who served in this way confronted me with the omnipresent problem that the book would become little more than a catalogue of vignettes.Yet equally, there were not so many Canadians that individual acts of courage and ingenuity could be subsumed in a broad narrative. It will be for the reader to decide whether a satisfactory balance has been achieved between acknowledging the role of each individual and setting his or her service in the wider context of the course of the Second World War.This would have been a much longer book had I included the story of those brave Canadian soldiers and airmen who, having been shot down over enemy-occupied territory and having evaded or escaped from captivity, joined the local resistance in its war against the Germans or Japanese.I have followed the selfimposed rule of including only those who were intentionally sent behind enemy lines.A further problem in writing this book arose from the remarkably uneven nature of the material upon which it is based.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; the direct Gemma label and the distilled Codex classifier agree on what is shown here.
