Abstract
This book was conceived around after the two editors independently read parts of a rich trove of letters written by the anthropologist T.F.McIlwraith from Bella Coola in and -.In -, I had decided to write a senior undergraduate research paper on McIlwraith for a course I was taking at the University of Western Ontario on the history of anthropology.I had the opportunity to travel to Ottawa, where I came across McIlwraith's letters to Edward Sapir in the files of the Canadian Ethnology Service, part of the (then) National Museum of Man.I was both intrigued and inspired by McIlwraith's experience as a pioneering Canadian anthropologist and decided, after completing my BA in , to inquire further.I contacted
