Abstract
GUIDING'S BEGINNINGS Victorian Antecedents and Early Twentieth-Century GrowthThe experiences of early twentieth-century Girl Guides in Calcutta, Winnipeg, Battersea, and beyond were, in many ways, legacies of developments in Britain and its empire from the mid-nineteenth century on.In this chapter, beginning in 1857 (the year of Baden-Powell's birth and a pivotal year in British racial and imperial thinking), I describe the significant Victorian and Edwardian social and cultural developments that preceded the establishment of the Scouts and Guides in 1908 and 1909, respectively.I then describe the founding of both organizations and outline Guiding's goals and organizational structure before tracing the movement's growth in England, Canada, and India to 1939.I place Guiding within a longer history of the British Empire and introduce several characters and themes that recur throughout the book.
