Dans Chemin-d’école et Demain j’aurai vingt ans, Patrick Chamoiseau et Alain Mabanckou créent chacun un personnage-enfant ambivalent, construit à partir d’une tension entre la biographie de l’auteur et un ancrage dans la fiction dévoilant son caractère artificiel. Cette artificialité est, selon Laurent Lepaludier, à la base de la métafiction. Cet article a pour objectif d’analyser la dimension métatextuelle du personnage-enfant dans ces deux récits, en montrant comment l’enfant apparaît comme un porte-parole de l’écrivain dans l’oeuvre. L’auteur utilise le métatexte pour faire de son personnage une mise en scène fictive de lui-même. En créant un personnage à la fois lecteur et écrivain en devenir, il fait de ce dernier une mise en abyme lui permettant de représenter sa vision de la littérature, qu’il peut ensuite mettre en pratique dans l’écriture de son oeuvre.
