Abstract
Agama selama berabad-abad sering terseret jauh dari misi moralnya yang mulia dan luhur sehingga berubah menjadi sumber kebencian, permusuhan, dan peperangan. Berangkat dari analisis historis seperti ini, muncul sebuah seruan untuk mengembalikan agama kepada misi aslinya seperti disuarakan oleh para pembawanya, untuk kemanusiaan, untuk menampilkan wajah aslinya, wajah humanis, wajah ramah. Melihat kenyataan ini, tampak dakwah menghadapi tantangan yang tidak ringan. Ketika dakwah diartikan sebagai transformasi sosial, dakwah akrab dengan teori-teori perubahan sosial yang mengasumsikan terjadinya progress (kemajuan) dalam masyarakat. Agama yang dibutuhkan oleh umat manusia setiap zaman adalah agama yang humanis. Doktrin, paham, atau gerakan yang bertujuan meningkatkan harkat dan martabat manusia disebut humanisme. Sementara humanisme dalam Islam dipahami sebagai sebuah gerakan yang mempunyai spirit egaliter. Nurcholish Madjid termasuk tokoh yang giat menyuarakan pesan Islam yang damai, ramah dan sejuk. Ia dianggap lebih kontekstual dalam memahami doktrin-doktrin agama, dan pesan-pesan keagamaannya dianggap lebih humanis.Pemikiran Madjid yang tertuang dalam pesan-pesan dakwahnya yang berorientasi pada etika sosial khususnya menyangkut hubungan agama, baik internal dan eksternal agama, lebih spesifik lagi menyangkut persaudaraan, toleransi, keadilan sosial dan lain-lain, dapat dilacak dari ide-idenya tentang pembaruan pemikiran dalam Islam.
