Canadian popular classics : Recycling Homer’s Odyssey in novels by Frederick Philip Grove, Robert Kroetsch and Margaret Atwood

Abstract
L’objet de la présente étude est l’analyse de la réception – souvent sous-estimée – des classiques, et de l'Odyssée d’Homère en particulier, dans les ouvrages de trois romans canadiens : Over Prairie Trails (1922) et A Search for America (1927) de Frederick Philip Grove, The Studhorse Man (1969) de Robert Kroetsch, ainsi que The Penelopiad (2005) de Margaret Atwood. Le dialogue avec les classiques que présentent ces textes semble suivre une trajectoire que Walter Pache a déjà mise en évidence dans la poésie canadienne et qui va de l’imitation à la parodie en passant par la citation. Cet essai a pour but de montrer que les romans en question présentent une réflexion métafictionnelle sur les potentialités et les dangers inhérents à la récupération des classiques et le difficile équilibre entre culture «populaire» et culture «sérieuse».
